Mulţumită unei tehnologii denumită Portage, Gentoo poate deveni un server securizat ideal, o staţie de lucru pentru dezvoltare, o staţie desktop profesională, sistem pentru jocuri, o soluţie integrată sau orice altceva -- orice doriţi să reprezinte. Datorită adaptabilităţii aproape infinită, noi denumim Gentoo o metadistribuţie.

Portage este inima Gentoo, şi are multe funcţii cheie. Pentru aceasta, Portage este sistemul de distribuţie software pentru Gentoo. Portage este şi un sistem de construire şi instalare de pachete. Când doriţi să instalaţi un pachet, Portage va construi automat a versiune personalizată a pachetului urmând specificaţiile dvs. exacte, optimizându-l pentru componentele dvs. hardware şi asigurându-vă că modulele opţionale din pachet pe care le doriţi sunt activate -- iar cele  pe care nu le doriţi, sunt inactivate.
